The transition to an economy based on lower oil consumption is going to present many challenges. For example we will need to consume less, make better use of local resources and rely less on Governments and multinational companies doing things for us. To tackle these local people will need suitable skills for the new economic situation. This might be as simple as learning how to grow and cook your own vegetables, right up to being trained how to install renewable energy generating systems.
The Transition Loughborough Reskilling Sub-group is looking at what skills will be most appropriate in Loughborough that is weaning itself off fossil fuels, who can teach us those skills and how best to train people so that the skills can spread. As part of this we’ve set up the Loughborough Skill Share Network, which is being funded in its first year as part of the Greeniversity Scheme.
We’ve also got a variety of pieces of equipment that members of Transition Loughborough can use to help them pick up new skills and pass them on to others.
