Potato Day 2015

We’re trying something new this winter: a Potato Day! We’re having a stall at Loughborough Market on Saturday 31st January 2015 at which you’ll be able to buy seed potato tubers from a small selection of varieties for just 14p per tuber.  Considering that in the shops you might be paying 20p per tuber or more, this is a really good deal.

We took pre-orders until early December and people who ordered before then could choose from a much larger range of potato varieties, as well as onions, shallots, garlic, peas and beans.  Pre-orders also only cost 12p per tuber, so the deal was even better!  If you did pre-order you’ll be able to pick up your fulfilled order from the Potato Day stall in Loughborough Market on 31st January 2015.

We’ll also have reusable Morsbags on the stall to give away, and plastic bins that can be used for growing potatoes on patios and balconies will be available in return for a small donation to Transition.

Exciting. What varieties will be for sale? Will they be ones we can’t get easily locally?

    • We’ll have six varieties on sale on Saturday on a first come, first served basis. There’ll be two first early, two second early and two maincrop. The varieties include Kestrel, Pentland Javelin and Arran Pilot (I can’t remember the other three!).

The people who pre-ordered back in October-December had access to a much wider range of varieties (including some rarer types such as blight resistant Sarpo Mira), as well as onion sets, garlic, shallots, peas and beans. That was one of the advantages of pre-ordering, as well as getting each tuber for 12p rather than the (still cheap!) 14p we’ll be charging tomorrow.
